In general, October to March is the best time to travel to Patagonia. Although the weather in Patagonia is very changeable, the chance of “higher” temperatures at this time is highest.

Visa & entry requirements

Argentine Patagonia:

German nationals can enter Argentina for up to 90 days as tourists visa-free. For entry, a passport is required, which is valid for at least 3 months.

Chilean Patagonia:

For a short stay for tourism or visit purposes no visa is required. Upon arrival, a “Tarjeta de Turismo” (tourist card) will be issued free of charge at the border, entitling you to a maximum stay of 90 days. The tourist card must be canceled until you leave.

Vaccinations

Neither on entry from a yellow fever area (often the neighboring states) nor on direct entry from Germany the proof of a valid yellow fever vaccine is currently prescribed by the authorities. However, it is recommended that you check your vaccination record and, if necessary, refresh the standard vaccines.

Language

The official language is Spanish. Without knowledge of Spanish, freedom of movement in Patagonia is sometimes limited. Basic knowledge of the Spanish is very helpful, although many residents in the touristy places frequented English. In Chilean Patagonia, the Spanish language is sometimes very different and contains many special phrases and uses words of the Chilean aborigines.

To eat and drink

Argentine Patagonia: Argentines love good food and are known for good red wine and excellent beef. Chilean Patagonia: Typical examples of local cuisine are empanadas (pies with meat, poultry or fish and onions, eggs, raisins and olives), humitas (spiced corn paste rolled in corn leaves and cooked), cazuela de ave (soup with rice, vegetables, chicken and various herbs ), Bife a lo pobre (steak with french fries, fried onions and fried egg) and parrillada (a selection of grilled meats on the charcoal grill). Seafood is also excellent.

People

The Chileans and Argentines are down to earth nations. Their families, home and work are the most important to them. Although a little more restrained than other South Americans, you will find hospitality and helpfulness so you will feel comfortable.
