In the Edo period, Lord Maeda's minister, Araya Gen'emon, ordered this ryokan to be the bathing and resting place for his master. 18 generations of the same family have been looking after this ryokan and its guests for over 300 years.
Araya Totoan is a traditional Japanese ryokan in the Yamashiro Onsen region of Japan and offers unparalleled Japanese service. Enjoy your private onsen followed by a KaiSaki dinner, a truly authentic ryokan experience.
Here you will enjoy the hospitality that only a small ryokan offers, the cuisine that has developed a long tradition, as well as pure relaxation in a quiet environment.
Located in the quaint village of Yamashiro Hot Spring and surrounded by beautiful rolling hills, Araya Totoan is the perfect retreat for anyone looking for an authentic off the beaten track experience. When you drive into the old town, you will feel like you are immersed in another world that has remained untouched by tourism. Originally built in 1639 the property has been in the same family for more than 18 generations and if you are lucky you will meet the current owner himself. Each of the rooms is authentically designed in Japanese style and equipped with tatami mats. Some rooms benefit from a private mirrored garden and an outdoor onsen (hot spring).

The best family trip we have ever done. And we have been traveling as a family for 20 years. The husky tour, the snowmobile race, the extraordinary lodges and camps - glamping in the snow - the incredible people we met and many other small and large details - have welded us together, challenged us, made us lastingly happy. Thank you Julia for the great coaching, the priceless inspiration and the perfect implementation.
