Of all the provinces of China, Yunnan has the greatest diversity: it borders Vietnam, Burma, Tibet and Laos and its geographical spectrum ranges from tropical rainforests in the south to snow-capped peaks on the edge of the Tibetan plateau.
The city of Kunming is the starting point for exploring this province. At the same height is Dali, a colorful city surrounded by a mighty city wall. From Dali you will take a scenic drive to the UNESCO World Heritage City of Lijang, where there are narrow, cobblestone streets and canals that run through the city - all against the magical backdrop of the snow-capped Dragon Mountains.
Further north, at an altitude of 3200 meters, you will find yourself in the enchanting area of Zhongdian (sometimes also known as Shangri-La). You cannot get any closer to Tibet without crossing the border. An interesting visit takes you to the Sumtsenling monastery, which is home to over 600 monks. For the more adventurous, there are challenging hikes through the remote landscape.
