You will visit “The Venice of the Tropics” a very secluded part of Costa Rica. Here you will look in vain for roads to explore this pristine landscape. Tortuguero is located on the Caribbean coast only 80 km from Limon and can only be reached by plane or boat. Paddle across the water in a traditional canoe and feel the bond with nature and the water. You slide through a kind of labyrinth, a beautiful, lonely wetland with many small channels that offers an ideal habitat for a multitude of animal and plant species. This rarely visited area is one of the most inaccessible places in Costa Rica. It is reminiscent of the Amazon basin and is a spectacular, secluded place.
The name “Tortuguero” itself comes from Spanish and means giant tortoise. These nest on the beaches and can be admired there from the beginning of March to mid-October. Explore this remote Caribbean coastal jungle with a local guide who is almost encyclopedic. Take a trip on a motorboat and go in search of two- and three-toed sloths. To fortify yourself after an eventful day, visit a traditional restaurant and enjoy a Caribbean lunch prepared with typical spices. Another adventure takes you over the Spiegelkanal. You experience a unique natural spectacle. A black colored mangrove channel that provides perfect light reflections encourages the animal world to live out its playful instinct. Marvel at the sophisticated acrobatics of the spider monkeys that reside there, encounter howler monkeys, spectacled caimans, peacocks, the endangered macaw and various species of sea turtles.
