Leroo La Tau is located on the western bank of the Boteti River, northwest of Khumaga Village and about 140 kilometers southeast of Maun. The eastern bank of the Boteti forms the border of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, which extends from the river bank towards the bushland and mineral-rich grasslands.
The Boteti River is the main drain of the Okavango Delta. It collects the water that flows past Maun and extends about 250 kilometers southeast of Lake Xau on the extreme southwest of the great Makgadikgadi salt flats. The floods in the Okavango Delta began to decline in the mid-1980s as the region entered a cycle of low-precipitation rains and the Boteti River gradually receded.
The river stopped just before Leroo La Tau in 1988 and dried up completely by the mid-1990s. Leroo La Tau still had a few water holes in the river bed, which continued to provide refuge for a small herd of hippos and crocodiles. Numerous zebras and wildebeests continue to graze in the rich grassy plains and migrate to the Boteti River at the end of winter to gain access to the remaining watering holes. In 2009, two decades after the Boteti River stopped flowing, record rainfall resulted in the Okavango River's highest flooding in 25 years, and the river once again flowed past Leroo La Tau. Leroo La Tau is built on cliffs that are over 10 meters above this changing shoreline environment. From here you have a lookout point that offers unsurpassed views of the river and Makgadikgadi Pans to the east.
The lodge offers guided game drives in the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park with an emphasis on the exceptional wildlife viewing along the Boteti River. Boat activities are also offered depending on the water level. Optional cultural excursions to Khumaga Village as well as day trips to Nxai Pan and Baines Baobabs (three nights only) are also available. Leroo La Tau means “lion paws”. Lions, zebras and wildebeests, Chobe Bushbucks, leopards, cheetahs, brown and spotted hyenas, impalas, kudu and jackals to name a few can be found in the area
