The ever-changing landscape of the Gobi Desert is home to some of Mongolia's most spectacular scenery. Particularly noteworthy are the majestic Ikh Bogd, the highest mountain in the Gobi-Altai Mountains, and the “singing sand dunes”, which stretch over 200 km and are traversed by the wind with beautiful, haunting music.
In the country's largest national park, Gobi Gurvansaikhan (meaning “three beauties of the Gobi”), the landscape extends over rocky and sandy desert plains, steep cliffs and gorges, salt flats and oases. There the canyon of Yolyn Am is so deep and narrow that winter ice can remain on the valley floor even in midsummer. The South Gobi desert is home to numerous camels that are normally used by shepherds to transport their gers (yurts).
